Abstract

Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary field, it is also an important and exciting topic in the fields of physics, chemistry and biology. The nanomaterials have wide range of application in biotechnology, material science, geology, and healthcare sectors. Nanomaterials exhibit bactericidal, bacteriostatic, fungicidal and fungistatic effects through various biochemical pathways. Nanosensors to detect microbes and contaminants would be an important application in food nanotechnology. Interactions between nanomaterials and microbes mostly occur during nano bioremediation, a technique used for contaminant removal using nanomaterials synthesized by microbes. This chapter deals with the various possibilities of interaction between the nanomaterials and microorganisms and the resultant effects.
