Anaerobic digestion via codigestion strategies for production of bioenergy

Abstract

In this chapter, an organic waste treatment process that combines different types of substrates, called codigestion, is discussed. It is a potential bioprocess to improve methane production and solid waste degradation by balancing the nutrients content and reducing the negative effects of inhibitory compounds. This chapter will discuss the types of substrates, energy recovery, microbial community structure, and life cycle assessment that are associated with the codigestion process, aiming to provide the knowledge to achieve stable process, high biogas production, and high microbial conversion efficiency. This chapter presents a comprehensive review on the conditions and advantages of codigestion based on the criteria energy recovery and economic analysis, with such substrates as agricultural waste, food waste, lignocellulosic biomass, and algae for biogas production.
