Preface

           India is a leading economy power in the Asian region giving due importance to both industrialization and environment management. The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India is formulating environmental management policies and decision-making process aiming at environmental protection and sustaining good quality of life for the living beings. Realizing the need of appropriate environmental information, the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India has set up an Environmental Information System (ENVIS) Centre in 1982 as a plan programme with the aim of providing national and international environmental information to varying users, which include decision-makers, policy planners, researchers, academicians, researcher scientist and the general public throughout the country to promote research as well as encourage the public for socially and environmentally sustainable development. Under the common objectives of collection, collation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of environment, the Ministry has established 68 ENVIS Centres in different parts of the country with different thematic area.


          ENVIS is a decentralized system with a network of assigned subject oriented Centres ensuring integration of national efforts in environmental information extending it services in the form of collection, collation, storage, retrieval and dissemination to all concerned. Presently the ENVIS network has its Focal Point at the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change which links all ENVIS Centres set-up in different organizations/establishments in the country in selected disciplines of environment. These Centres have been set up in the disciplines of pollution control, toxic chemicals, central and offshore ecology, environmentally sound and appropriate technology, bio-degradation of wastes and environment management etc.


Environmental Information System (ENVIS) Centre (DzUM)

           The ENVIS Centre set up in the Department of Zoology, University of Madras by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India is assigned a responsibility for the collection, collation and dissemination of information on the thematict area of 'Microorganisms and Environment Management'. This centre provide information about various aspects of Microorganisms and Environment Management such as research on microbes, abstracting services, expert information, environmental issues, carrier opportunities, publication of newsletters in both tamil and english languages, query services etc.
