The Workshop was structured with series of lectures from eminent scientists in the field of ecology and environment. The workshop had enthusiastic participants of students, scholars, professors, scientist from various college s / institutions and public as audiences. Nearly 200 participants were present at the venue of which 149 students were pre - register ed to take part in the workshop. Students and P rofessors from different D epartments of various colleges such as Queen Marys College, Stella Marys College, Pachaiappas College, Presidency College, Loyala College, Madras Christian College, Ethiraj College, V ivekananda College, University of Madras etc. participated in the workshop.

The workshop was started with innovation seeking clarity of thoughts and welcome address was given by Dr. C. Arulvasu, ENVIS Coordinator and Prof. S. Janarthanan, Head, Department of Zoology, Felicitate the gathering and Founder’s message was given by Prof. N. Munuswamy, (Former Coordinator of DZUM ENVIS Centre), UGC - BSR Faculty Fellow. The workshop was inaugurated by Rev. Dr. S. Ignacimuthu, S. J., (Former Vice C hancellor of University of Madras and Bharathiyar University), Director, Entomology Research Institute, Loyola College, Chennai.

This workshop an intended to provide some guidance on this new challenge by inviting speakers that could share their thoughts and experiences and discuss the issues with workshop participants. The speakers came also from different backgrounds and presented the audience with different practical experiences, insights and views, both at an organizational and national level. It gave a good impression and understanding of the many perspectives that c an and should be taken into account when defining and defend against climate changes. The workshop sessions had a very fruitful discussion on the topic itself with our enthusiastic audiences.

In the following a report will be given of the presentations and the discussions during the workshop. This report will follow the structure of the workshop that started out with : Climate Changes “Caring for all life under the sun” by Rev. Dr. S. Ignacimuthu, S. J. Director, Entomology Research Institute (ERI) , Loyola College. His talk was on general environmental awareness such as the importance and uniqueness of our planet and impact on environmental due to human interface. Climate change and its effects, global warming and evidences were explained in his lectu re. He also briefed the impact of climate change on biodiversity and the reasons to protect it. He also covered the factors that cause environmental changes/degradation such as urbanization, population growth and economic growth, intensification of agricul ture, increase in energy and transport use etc. and how ozone has been depleted due to these activities. He concluded with the reasons on why to care about the environment and how to save our environment.

Environmental pollution effects on Ozone layer by Dr. K. Venkataraman, Senior Scientist Consultant, NCSCM, Anna University. His lecture was thought provoking and clarified the myths and facts related to the depletion of ozone. He explained the importance of ozone, where it is situated and how it is protec ting the earth. He listed the compounds that damaged the ozone and the harmful effects that occur consequently. He clearly explained the regions that are most at risk due to ozone layer depletion. Later in his talk he explained the effects of ozone depleti on on biodiversity especially in respect to coral reef. The amount of information he gave was simplifed, easy to understand and enormous.

Ozone layer, Climate Change and effects on biomes and life on earth by Prof. N. Parthasarathy, Dean, School of Life S ciences, Pondicherry University. In this talk he briefed about the Ozone Heros Campaign, The Montreal Protocol, ozone layer and compounds that deplete it. He also explained the challenges present in healing of the ozone layer and about the new chemical dic hloromethane (CH2Cl2) found in paints, solvents and pharmaceuticals that slows down the process. The talk also covered the areas damaged by the ozone layer depletion and its effect on biodiversity of marine phytoplankton, tropical rainforests, coral reef, seagrass and mangroves. He addressed the effects of ozone layer depletion in our country and globally.

A short lecture was delivered by Dr. S. R. Ganesh, Scientist, Snake Park, Guindy on how the amphibian and reptile diversity present on the terrestrial an d mountain tops gets affected due to global warming and ozone layer depletion. Along with these lectures videos, power point presentations and other informative products were displayed to create the awareness on the importance of ozone layer. The feedback of the participants confirmed that the workshop was very much appreciated as well as that there is a pressing need for more sensible approaches and for other opportunities to discuss the many issues. The valedictory address was given by Dr. K. Venkatarama n , Former Director, The Zoological survey of India. The certificate was distributed by our delegates to the participants who came from 15 different colleges and universities in and around Chennai followed by vote of thanks from Dr. G.
