State Key Laboratory of Electroanalytical Chemistry, Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changchun, China.

Abstract

Microbial sensors composed microorganisms can sense and respond to analyte of interest with chemical, physical or physiochemical signals, by virtue of metabolism, gene expression or produced proteins. The sensing mechanisms of microbial sensors, the advantage and limitation of microorganisms as sensing elements, the methods for microbial cell immobilization, the detection technique and the applications in environmental monitoring, diagnosis, intercellular metabolites and heavy metal detection have been summarized and discussed.

Keywords: Diagnosis, Genetic circuits, Heavy metals, Metabolites, Microbial sensors, Regulatory elements, Reporters, Riboswitch, Transcription, Transcription factor, Translation, Whole cell microbial sensors.
