Role of biopesticides in crop protection: present status and future thrust

Biswas, A.

Abstract

Indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides in India in recent years has resulted in severe implications in the development of pesticidal resistance in key pests and diseases, pesticide residues in food chain, disruption of ecosystem, environmental pollution affecting human health. Microbes such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes and botanicals are the major biopesticides that are used mostly as alternatives to chemicals. This review paper discusses the present status of some commonly used biopesticides including their mode of action, formulations etc., recent developments in biopesticides research, advantages in its use, and reasons for low uptake of biopesticides. Future thrusts on this line are also indicated.
