Archaea

The Archaea are a domain of single-celled microorganisms, extreme environments. Archaea were initially classified as bacteria, receiving the name archaebacteria (in Kingdom Monera), but due to the unique properties its cells, they are separated from the other two domains of life: Bacteria and Eukaryota and evolved as new kingdom. Archaea are the extreme environment inhabitants. Some live near rift vents in the deep sea at temperatures well over 100 degrees Centigrade. Others live in hot springs, in extremely alkaline or acid waters, or in extremely saline water. An interesting fact about an Archaea, Halobacterium is that the red light-sensitive pigment that gives Halobacterium its color, which is a simple photosynthetic system that provides the archaean with chemical energy, is known as bacteriorhodopsin and is chemically very similar to the light-detecting pigment rhodopsin, found in the vertebrate retina.
